Abstract
For my capstone project, I plan to create and upcycle clothes based around masks. My main goal is to reduce the amount of textile waste going into landfills, by means of upcycling clothes. My motivation resonates with the fact that we live on such an isolated island and we need to use our resources wisely and that in order to do that we need to start taking action. As for the bigger picture, everyone needs to start taking action and I hope that this project inspires people to do so and gives them a little “kick-start” to upcycling. Furthermore, I intend to create wearable clothing pieces out of upcycled clothes and advertise them and their meaning/background on a website.
Essential Question: How do we reduce the amount of textile waste going into U.S. landfills?
By upcycling clothes, it removes the need to produce new or raw materials therefore reducing the amount of waste going into landfills. Therefore, this project will reduce the raw materials going into landfills, specifically around our community.
