Sea Vintage Hawaii- Clothing Collection

Ollie Hope

My Background

Ever since I was a little girl, I’ve always been inspired by my dad’s job, designing and creating Aloha Shirts. I’ve had it in the back of my mind that one day I would start a brand with him, and this capstone class seemed like the perfect opportunity to do so. My dad knows what it takes to start a clothing company since he’s started a couple over the years, including Hawaiian Style and Kahala shirts. He’s also worked with brands like Quicksilver, Patagonia, Western Aloha, and Local Motion. I feel so lucky to be able to work with my dad, and have such a knowledgeable resource.

Abstract

Our brand is called Sea Vintage Hawaii, meaning to see vintage aloha shirts in a new, modernized way. We spelt sea as the ocean sea because my dad and I both have a deep passion for surfing and being in the water. The goal of Sea Vintage Hawaii is to separate Hawaii from the tacky tourist stereotype and instead, represent Hawaii in a tasteful and respectful way.

Ideation (SEPT 10)

A piece of Hawaii

Anyone who loves and appreciates Hawaii wants a shirt, tote bag, or hat that they can take with them anywhere they go to remind them of this special place. A lot of brands that already exist add a cheesy, un authentic aspect to their designs, which some people aren’t necessarily looking for. Parents and friends are often on the hunt for gifts for their kids and friends for many different holidays and occasions. Teenagers are constantly trying to upgrade their wardrobe, especially with school in session. There aren’t many options in Waimea, and on the Big Island in general for unique vintage garments. Oftentimes people need to order clothes online which can take many weeks to receive. You also take the risk when you order something online of having it be un accurately represented. A solution to this problem would allow people on the Big Island, and potentially all over the state to have an authentic piece of Hawaii to wear and use that is easily package-able to take with you, and use everyday.
