Kaisei Ikaika Mochizuki (Mochi)

Aloha, my name is Kaisei Ikaika Mochizuki, and many know me as Mochi. I am full Japanese, and have a strong connection to Japan, but also to Hawai’i as well. In Japanese my name means to be born or to live in the ocean: Kai, meaning the ocean; Sei, meaning to be born or to live. In Hawai’i, Kai also means the ocean, so I believe it is not a coincidence why I have a loving passion and connection with Hawai’i and especially the ocean. I was born in Waimea, Hawai’i, and have lived in Waikoloa all of my life. My parents came from Japan and moved to America to explore the world and eventually made their way to Hawai’i. My grandparents moved around China and Japan throughout their early lives due to World War II which has had a great impact on our family. My grandparents lived through a traumatic childhood and really showed how important peace isto be grateful, and that everyday is a blessing. My dad carried on this message and has passed it on to my sisters and I. What brings joy to my life is seeing others happy and I believe it is me and my family’s role and Kuleana to be helpful, make others smile, and spread positivity. My sisters and parents have always been role models to me and I could see and experience how their presence changes the people and energy around them. My family is very adventurous and we love to spend time outside. On the Mauka side I love to hike, take pictures and videos, and enjoy the beautiful natural scenery. On the Makai side I love to fish/spearfish, bodyboard, and cruise at the beach. I love everything about my beautiful home and am blessed to be born and raised in Hawai’i.

Abstract

I choose No Ku’u Hawai’i because of my love for Hawai’i. No Ku’u Hawai’i means for my beloved Hawai’i and through this capstone, I want to give back and be apart of something greater. Hawai’i has offered me so much things that many would not be able to experience. Whether it is the beautiful environment, or the delicious foods, or the warming hospitality, this island has helped to shape me into the person I am today. As I step out into the bigger world and start a new journey, I thought No Ku’u Hawai’i would be the perfect way for me to give back to the place that has raised me my whole life.
