Ka Makani Snack Shack

Kacen Hamada

I am Kacen Hamada, a senior at HPA.

Abstract

My project is bringing a concession stand to feed the students of HPA before their co-curriculars. I started this project because I have been a varsity athlete for all of my years here. Every day we were able to get snacks to refuel before our sports, but due to the pandemic and lack of funding and manpower, the sandwich bar unfortunately shut down. With my project, I hope to bring it back and expand on it giving student-athletes more options to allow their full potential to shine on the field. With the help of the Ohana Association and the Athletic Department, we can create a system that will last well after I graduate.

Student-Athletes Have Gone Hungry

Student-athletes are always hungry before sports. Ever since the pandemic, the school has gotten rid of the sandwich bar open before sports for health reasons. With the places to get a snack before practice being limited to Mr. Walker, the athletes have been going hungry. Without the proper nutrition, they cannot perform at 100%. Without having the energy to get through the sports, it leaves them lethargic and fatigued which ultimately restricts their full potential as a student-athlete. After a long day of classes students need a clean and sanitary place to get healthy snacks to refuel before going out to their co-curricular activities.
