Kawela Takushi

Kawelakamahinekukui Jean Takushi

My name is Kawelakamahinekukui Jean Takushi. I was born and raised in Waimea and Kawaihae, Hawaiʻi. The mountain I identify myself with is Maunakea, my rain is Kīpuʻupuʻu. Kohākōhau and the Waikoloa streams run through the areas that give me life. My family comes from all over the world, I am Japanese, Hawaiian, Portuguese, Filipino, White/Caucasian, and Puerto Rican. I am passionate about the land, water, and my family.

Abstract

Since my family comes from different parts of the world I wanted to focus on a topic that can tie everything together, WATER. Water is a precious resource that we are so fortunate to have here.

The No Kuʻu Hawaiʻi capstone is the best fit for me because its all about Hawaiʻi. Hawaiʻi is my home and I am thrilled that I will be able to learn more about the space I come from. In my project I will be diving into the importance of water and how water has affected my family throughout generations. Some specifics I will be focusing on are the plantations (which lead to my “genetic makeup”), where the different streams and water sources are of my homeland and their ancient names. I will also be focusing on the place I live – Waimea: What is the deeper meaning of Waimea, how it came to be, what Waimea was like before, and how would they get their water? This capstone class will help me to identify and learn about where all our water comes from today and will help me to reconnect with my surroundings.
