A SAFE SPACE

Fiorella Hernández

Fiorella Hernández was born and raised in Venezuela. All her life she was passionate about art and the different forms that it could be expressed. Since she was 3 years old she started dancing Flamenco, then later on in middle school she started doing painting and other art classes. She graduated on july 2021 in Venezuela where she grew up her whole life, but she moved to Hawaii to study a year abroad as a postgraduate student at HPA. This experience was new and exciting, but also kind of scary and unknown. This change in her life gave her the chance to meet new people and new opportunities beyond what she could ever imagine. She is doing for Capstone a series of drawings that are inspired by stories of women about their experiences with sexism and misogyny. She is not sure what is going to be the future for her, but she would like to study something in the creative spectrum.

Abstract

A Safe space is a series of drawings that intend to demonstrate the emotions that women experience because of misogyny and sexism. I decided to do this topic because in the place where a I live is very common to overlook misogyny as something normal or normalized, as I researched and talk to people about my project I noticed that a lot of people didn’t knew that this was a problem, so this inspired me more to do this project even more. What I want to accomplish with this project is to spread awareness and inspire women to share their stories and let them know that they are not alone.
